Well, Mom heard back from the Vet. He recommends that I stay away from the park and dogs I don’t know, since any further incidents could escalate and set me back further. He did recommend a couple dog day cares for socialization (since they can control the pack dynamics), one of them I have even been to; but we don’t have the money to spend on regular visits. So, as many of you suggested, we’re going to have to stick to play dates with just one or two of my close friends that never get aggressive.
Our membership for the park lasts until May, so we may go every once in a while and just stick to the small dog side if we can find a friend that doesn’t mind staying over there with us.
We’re both kind of bummed, since we really liked that community of familiar dogs and their owners. But Mom is more worried about my physical and mental health.
And let’s face it, I’m completely content to just stay home and play with Mom! I never bug her to go to the park. Anytime I have excess energy, I just run around the house, from room to room, at top speed. (Mom is hoping to catch this on video some time. But every time she brings out the camera, I stop whatever I’m doing.)
Here are a couple videos of me playing fetch with Mom. She is really happy I finally figured out to bring the ball back. Though, I don’t always want to give her the ball, so she always has another one on hand to throw. So then, I’ll drop the one in my mouth and go after the new one.
I think the play dates with just one or two of the non-agressive friends is probably the best way to go. I prefer to play with my pawrents too. We don't like to hear about you getting hurt Laney. And all because some doggies don't want to learn to speak Shar Pei. Humph. Have fun playing fetch! Bolo http://peiinthelife.blogspot.com/
Ok I watch a lot of the Dog Whisperer and our family has had a shar pei for 12 years now. Shar peis only care about their owners. Plus she's not a problem if she doesn't hurt people and little kids. Certainly she can't seriously hurt other dogs even if she tried. But if she gets abused a lot by other dogs it might make her harmful to kids and people.
Thankfully, Laney loves all people, young and old. The only time she has shown aggression towards a human was when she was confronted with a stranger at our house (FedEx Man). She's an excellent watch dog. But not a good guard dog, as she couldn't exactly hurt anyone with her size or bite. I wouldn't ever worry about her hurting a human.
Yeah. Our Tommy the little 44 pound shar pei gets like he's going to go furious on strangers like men who come to do housework. But his teeth are like mouseteeth. He's never even broken skin. Laney is a sweetie too. Too bad she gets taken advantage of.
Hi Laney That sounds good - arrange dates with your friends. That should build your confidence and keep you safe at the same time. Glad you have it sorted - have fun that is the main thing! love Martha & Bailey xx
We agree that play dates with friends is probably the way to go. We are sorry you are having some issues with other dogs. It's not easy. Sometimes other owners can make mountains out od molehills, too.
Harooo woo Laney! I think zoomies in the house is great!!! Even playing fetch! Woo is a lucky girl!! It's ok to have just a few close friends right now. Woo is a good girl and your mommy is protecting woo!!
Sounds like a good advice Laney! Better be safe! Since we don't have dog parks here my best option is to play with my mom at home! Kisses and hugs Lorenza
Staci - Yes, we pay an anuual fee for the dog parks in this area. When our membership lapses, we just won't renew. Oh well, we made good use of it last summer!

Hi Laney
The safe playdates sound like a safe way to get in some socialization with other dogs.
I prefer to play with my mom too.

Bummer about the vets news but maybe you can just play with your buddies. :) Looks like you were having fun with the ball!

That's good advice to stay away from the dog parks. Do you have to pay to use your dog park?
I really do wish that you lived close to us. We have the best doggie daycare at our vet with monitored socialization in park play.
Lots of Luv & kisses
